08. BE PREPARED TO LEAVE

You can negotiate for hours with a sales manager at the dealership. It all comes down to who has the knowledge and the stamina. Obviously they are not going to give you the car. I once had a customer that loved her car but was very upset because the manager didn’t throw the leather interior package into her deal. She already got a great deal and leather interior cost between $1,500.00-$2,000 aftermarket, depending on the grade of leather, so of course they would not throw it in at for a loss. You have to be realistic.
But if you have done your homework, if you can bring in prices from other dealerships, wait until the end of the month or year, have decent credit, you can make a great deal. If they will not meet your realistic price, be prepared to get up and leave. Do not waste your entire day on a dealership that will not work with you. There are hundreds of cars in every city and town and you must be prepared to move on. You MUST have a serious mindset about walking out, you can’t fake this.

Saying that, if you are a serious buyer, the sales manager will not want you to leave. He may give you the idea that he is willing to let you walk but if he is hungry enough he will call you back, probably before you can get into your own car. It is your decision if you want to go back into the dealership and start the negotiations all over again. The ball is defiantly in your court at this point.
