06. KEEP YOUR KEYS

Just a short note on, “what not to handover” when you first walk into the showroom. They will ask you to fill out an information sheet and will want to make a copy of your driver’s license (Why would you give them a copy of your drivers license?) Do you give the salesperson a copy of your driver’s license when you buy a television? No. When you hand over your drivers license they scan your license and this allows them to download a tremendous amount of personal information about you. Now if you are going to test-drive the vehicle that is a different story. keep-your-keys.jpg

Of course they will then need a copy. They will then ask you for the keys to the vehicle that you are trading in. They will say that they are going to appraise your vehicle. DO NOT GIVE THEM YOUR KEYS. Go with the salesperson and open up the vehicle for him or her. I know it doesn’t seem like a big deal but when the dealership has the keys to your car it gives them more power over you and your decision making capabilities. I cannot tell you how many people looked at me a couple of days after they had purchased a vehicle and said that they did not even want to buy a car that day. Many times I asked them point blank, “then why did you buy the vehicle if you didn’t want to buy it?” The majority of the time the customer said that they felt pressured and caved in.
