17. I DIDN’T SEE THAT SCATCH

Before you take possession of any vehicle, look at every inch of that car. Take pictures of it at the dealership before you drive off the lot. Better yet, take close up pictures with your salesperson in the pictures. This will be proof that if you find a scratch or dent when you get the vehicle home it was there before you took delivery. Have a friend or two look at the vehicle with you. Remember, once you drive it off the lot the vehicle is yours.

Another tip, do not take delivery at night. Darkness hides all kinds of bad stuff. After you drive away they don’t want to fix any exterior damage.

They will tell you about road rocks, sand, road repair debris, everything except the fact that you found a dent or a scratch when you got home. Take nothing for granted in this case. Get everything in writing

Make sure there is plenty of light. If you have to wait until the next day when the sun is shinning, WAIT! If the dealership pressures you into taking the vehicle that night, either high tail it out of there or get all repairs that they have promised to you in writing. Preowned vehicles are a little different. Sometimes they are sold, “as is.” If you see a dent or scratch the next day you are out of luck. Do not ever take their word. Personally, I would never take delivery of a vehicle at night.
