At my dealership they charged the customer for an exterior paint protectant that was commonly referred to by the salespeople as, “the biggest rip off at the dealership.” Even the greediest salespeople felt uncomfortable about pushing this option. If the protectant was not applied at the port or at the factory the accessories department would make an appointment for the customer to bring the vehicle back to have the exterior protectant applied. I learned later on that even when the customer brought the vehicle back to have the protectant applied it was rarely ever done.

The vehicle was simply washed and dried to make it look shiny so the customer would just assume that the protectant had been applied. Believe me, this was not the decision of the salespeople or the assistant service managers. Top management directed this.
